William & Elizabeth Ann Scott Brumfield family
ELIZABETH ANN SCOTT d/o John Wilson II &
Mary Keith Scott b. 4 Aug 1827 Tennessee or possibly Illinois
(same day as her husband, according to the family bible) d. 1891?
(no source), probably in Missouri (although there is no marker in Old Scotland
Cemetery for her) m/1. 16 Mar 1848 Pike co. Ill. William Brumfield
s/o Obediah & Margaret Thorton Brumfield b. 4 Aug 1827 Jessamine
co. Ky. d. 27 July 1868 Gallatin, Daviess co. Mo.; 7 children. Elizabeth
m/2. 11 Jun 1878 Daviess co. Mo. Jonathan Hartman s/o Daniel &
Phebe Stuck Hartman b. 1810 Pa. or Clark co. Ohio d. before
1880 Daviess co. Mo., may be buried Old Scotland Cemetery.
At the December court in 1839 in Dewitt county Illinois, William was
presented as an orphan by the Sheriff; James Vandeventer agreed to take
him in. At the March court in 1840, he was "a poor boy aged 11 (sic),
son of Obadiah Brumfield...", and was bound out to George B. Leeman as
an "indentured apprentice".
William served in the Civil War.
William and Elizabeth had 8 children:
-
Mary Catherine (or Mary Keith) b. 26 Jul 1849 Pike co. Ill.
d. 1870 (before 20 June, possibly 26 Feb 1870) Daviess co. Mo. m.
18 Jul 1869 Daviess co. Mo. Richard Dowell s/o John Joel &
Sarah Huston Easton Dowell b. 19 Jan 1847 Missouri d. 10 Apr
1879 Daviess co. Missouri (Richard m/2. 20 Apr 1871 Malissa
J Goodvin and had 4 children). I have a scrawled note that says "2
children died young", with no source (they'd have to have been twins);
I also have that Mary died aged 20 years, 7 months, 0 days (hence the death
date of 26 Feb 1870), also with no source. Perhaps she's listed in
the 1870 Mortality Schedules for Daviess county.
-
Sarah Elizabeth b. 8 May 1851 Pike co. Ill. d. 17 Oct 1931
Jamesport twp., Daviess co. Mo. m. 25 Jun 1871 Daviess co. Missouri
Zebulon Elijah "Eli" Hobbs d. 25 Jul 1889 Daviess County, Missouri.
9 children, only 3 still alive in 1900.
-
John Andrew b. 25 May 1853 Pike co. Ill. d. 13 Jun 1892 Daviess
co. Missouri? (no source or evidence) m. 2 Apr 1874 Dewitt co. Ill.
m. Frances Scott d/o William L. & Drucilla Cox Scott b. 1854/5 Dewitt
co. Ill.; I lose track of John and Frances after 1882, at which point they
lived in Dewitt county and had no children. There was another John
Brumfield from Ray co. Mo. who lived in California (and married Maria Seward)
- this is not him; that John Brumfield lived in Ray county Missouri before
his marriage in 1882, while our John was in Dewitt county Illinois.
One source said of John, "Left home and was never heard from again".
I have also heard that there is a stone in Old Scotland Cemetery next to
William Brumfield's that says "Aged 38y.-7mo-18da", though I did not see
it myself and it is not listed online - though that might explain the above
death date, provided someone had a close-but-different birth date (it's
about 6 months off).

d. 2 Aug 1941 Coffey, Daviess co. Missouri m. Myrtle Hardman b. 1881/2
(though his wife in the 1920 census is Zella M. Brumfield, b. 1884/5 Mo.).
He is listed in the 1900 census as a widow, living as a boarder with his
cousin Elijah Scott and uncle William L. Scott
in Knox co. Missouri. One source says "Locally known as 'Sherm'".
At least one child. Charles' father on his death certificate is called
